Communication 106: Interview of Vanhin

I serve as a moderator at More Good Foundation's LDS.net. I admire greatly each of the individuals that are part of the moderating team on LDS.net. Each of them has a love for the gospel and unique talents that they bring to moderation. In thinking about what I could present here in my Communication blog series, I realized that there were two persons in particular on the LDS.net moderating team whose communication style I think is head-and-shoulders above a lot of others. I decided that I wante… Continue

Communication 105

I continue to be impressed with a little book I'm reading titled Life's Greatest Lessons: 20 Things That Matter by Hal Urban. "Kind Words Cost Little But Accomplish Much" is the heading of one chapter. I want to share with you his summary: "There is a lot more good in people than there is bad. "We need to get in the habit of looking for what's good in others. "Building people up is more effective than tearing them down. "Nothing feels better than genuine praise from others. "We all need… Continue

Communication 104

I was reading in the New Testament the other day and happened across a passage in Romans that listed a long list of the most terrible sins. I had the insight that a good half, at least, of those sins are sins of communication. Let me give you the passage and the sins and then I'll comment further. This is Romans 1:29-31. I'm going to list first the sins that don't particularly relate to communication: fornication wickedness covetousness murder haters of God inventors of evil things disobedient… Continue

Communication 103

I am currently reading an important book by author Hal Urban titled Life's Greatest Lessons: 20 Things That Matter. There is a chapter he titles: "Good People Build Their Lives On a Foundation of Respect". He talks about several things that are a part of respect, and one of those things is 'language' -- how we are willing to talk to another. Hopefully as Latter-day Saints sharing the gospel online our language will be full of respect. Mr. Urban gives a list of negatives: Put-downs Sweari… Continue

Communication 102

In the www.lds.org Gospel Topic library, there is an entry for "Communication". It says: "True disciples of Jesus Christ seek to follow His example in the ways they communicate. Their communications, both verbal and nonverbal, are to be kind, compassionate, and helpful, reflecting a love for Heavenly Father's children and an understanding that all people are brothers and sisters. " Under 'Additional Information' in the Communication topic, lds.org has chosen to quote the following: "Elder L.… Continue

Hi MaidservantX. How rude of me not to acknowledge your friendly gesture in a timely manner. Thank you for the welcome. I enjoyed your series of essays on Communications. I especially liked the quote in 102 about kindness, compassion and helpfulness. Now there's some good advice for Cyberspace visitors to our blogs. Some seem to only want to attack, tear apart and destroy. Sigh...reminder to self: "There must needs be opposition in all things." Without it, there would be no growth. What is involved in being a moderator for lds.net?
